Blood Cells

There are three major cell types contained in circulating blood: erythrocytes (red blood cells), leukocytes (white blood cells) and thrombocytes (platelets). Each of these cell types has specific functions that are vital to proper functioning of the body.

Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)

RBCs are small, bi-concave shaped cells which lack nuclei. RBCs function to carry oxygen from the lungs and distribute it to all of the tissues in the body. The life span of a red blood cell is about 120 days, and the bone marrow is constantly producing more RBCs to replenish lost blood cells in circulation.

Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)

Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)

WBCs comprise the primary immune component of the blood. WBCs protect the body from viral, bacterial, and parasitic invasion through a variety of mechanisms. These cells work together to prevent infection in vulnerable areas of the body (e.g. the lungs), as well as in wounds (both natural and surgical). The production of WBCs occurs in the bone marrow.

Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)

Thrombocytes (Platelets)

Platelets are small (2-4 microns in diameter), disc-like, anuclear cells found in plasma. Platelets play a key role in primary hemostasis leading to the formation of blood clots.

Platelets (Activated and Non-Activated)
