Tracheal Replacement

Tracheal defects resulting from trauma, surgical complications, and congenital defects represent a substantial health problem, affecting hundreds of thousands of patients annually. Large tracheal defects remain a severe clinical problem for which there is currently no adequate solution. Smaller defects can be treated by tracheal resection and anastomosis, but these procedures present significant risk of complications that may necessitate additional, costly surgeries. Other alternative, chronic tracheostomy, leads to additional health risks, expenses, and quality of life issues.

Arteriocyte is currently optimizing novel technologies to produce neotracheal tissue from autologous human chondrogenic cells. By producing robust tracheal tissues from the body’s own cells, the company hopes to eventually be able to provide a safe alternative to current surgical procedures, minimizing risk of future complications in tracheal reconstruction. Preclinical.
